See if Eating Disorder / Body Image Therapy is right for you.
A little support between sessions—or before you’re ready to begin.
Every other week, receive thoughtful reflections and gentle practices to help you navigate food and body image struggles, soften self-criticism, and build trust in your body.
Do you struggle with the tension of feeling out of control and simultaneously fight to maintain control?
Undoubtedly, it’s painful to feel obsessed with food and the body. Yet, it might seem impossible to stop obsessing. While you don’t necessarily enjoy the chunky green smoothie every morning, the hours of meal planning, and the long hours at the gym, if you don’t do it, nagging guilt persists. Subsequently, that shame sometimes spirals into binging, purging, or a deep sense of hopelessness.
Body Image Pain Can Also Be About Living in a Body That Our Society Stigmatizes.
Alternatively, you may live in a body that has been stigmatized by our society (whether you live in a larger body, a body of color, or a body that doesn’t express your gender). Indeed, it might not feel safe to be in your body because it’s been ridiculed by our society. Even though there may be nothing wrong with your body, you’ve been judged harshly. Maybe you’ve even learned to hate your body to protect yourself from this unwarranted ridicule.
Sometimes the sense of feeling unsafe in your body results from trauma or violation that happened to you (and your body).
Common Questions About Body Image & Eating Disorders
Why do I hate my body even when I try to accept it?
First of all, I’m so sorry you have to carry this. It’s such a painful experience.
There are lots of reasons why we might hate our bodies. We are surrounded with messages about how a body should look. Oftentimes, those messages come from the people we love most. We feel like we need to keep our body a certain way in order to feel loved and accepted.
With all that messaging about how our body should look we get really good at appraising ourselves. It’s almost like we just see ourselves from the outside. We forget what it feels like to experience ourselves from the inside. What it feels like to have a body that feels the sun on our skin, feels the breeze, hugs, stays present, breaths in rhythmic waves.
Theresa Silow says, “Your body is not a thing that you have. It’s an experience that you are.”
Is it okay that I want to change my body even though I know I should just accept it?
It’s perfectly fine for two things to exist here: the desire to change your body and the desire to accept it. It’s likely that there are different parts of you that want different things. It’s quite possible that it feels like the only way to get the sense of belonging we all need is to change your body. So yes, it is so normal to yearn for that. What we are really longing for is to know we matter, and that we can belong.
How do I stop obsessing about food and my weight?
It’s likely you are just stuck in a loop right now. Many times, what we think is discipline and will power is actually just a pendulum that is destined to swing the other way at some point. When we restrict, we get mentally obsessed with “bad” foods. To reduce that urgency, we just need to work on neutralizing food so it doesn’t have such an urgency around it.
Sometimes, our preoccupation with food and weight is also connected to anxiety, trauma, or deeply ingrained beliefs about ourselves and our bodies. When additional nutritional or medical support is needed, I collaborate with other professionals to help you develop a more peaceful, trusting relationship with food and your body.
