Boundaries and People-Pleasing Therapy In Phoenix, AZ

You don’t have to say ‘yes.’

Boundaries and People-Pleasing

You’ve probably been told your “wise beyond your years.” You’ve been the “go to” person as long as you can remember. You are good at it, but you’ve probably thought about how you’d like to say ‘no’ sometimes. In fact, you might even feel suffocated by the asks that come from others.

The problem is, when you think about saying ‘no,’ you’re filled with guilt. The part of you that wants to say ‘no’ gets overshadowed by a voice that says, “it’s not that big of a deal. You can handle it. And besides, how selfish are you if you can’t help someone who needs you.” So you override the ‘no’ and say ‘yes’ again.

But that override leaves you with a sadness, and some people have even described it as disgust. Your body senses the boundary violations and the pain of self-abandonment. It’s just hard to know how to return to you.

Therapy for Boundaries and People-Pleasing Might Be for You If You’re…

$

Saying yes before you’ve had a chance to consider what you want?

You agree in the moment, then realize you don’t have the time, energy, or desire to follow through.

$

Feeling responsible for keeping everyone comfortable?

You notice shifts in someone’s mood and quickly start figuring out how to make things okay.

$

Explaining, apologizing, or softening what you need?

A simple request becomes a long explanation. You want the other person to understand and to know you’re not being difficult.

$

Feeling guilty after setting a limit?

Even when your boundary makes sense to you, someone’s disappointment can leave you wanting to take it back.

$

Giving so much that you end up exhausted or resentful?

You care about the people in your life, but you’re tired of being available while your own needs keep getting pushed aside.

Difficulty With Boundaries Isn’t Always Obvious. Are You…

Easygoing on the outside, but unsure what you actually want?

Waiting until you’re overwhelmed before saying something?

Going quiet or losing your words when someone pushes back?

When Knowing Your Boundaries Doesn’t Make Them Easier to Hold

You’re trying to find a way to speak up without risking the relationship.

Perhaps you think that if you find the right words, explain yourself carefully, or choose the perfect moment, the other person won’t feel hurt or disappointed.

Sometimes a thoughtful conversation helps. Other times, you keep revising what you want to say until your needs disappear from the conversation altogether.

You may have read the books and practiced the scripts. Yet when the moment comes, your heart races, your words get smaller, or you agree to something you don’t want.

We’ll make room for that difficulty, too. Therapy doesn’t have to become another place where you’re expected to be better at saying no.

We can get curious about what makes speaking up feel costly.

For some people, being agreeable helped preserve closeness or avoid conflict. For others, taking care of everyone became a familiar role—or a way to feel needed and valued.

Your circumstances matter, too. Some relationships leave more room for your needs than others.

We won’t assume we already know your story. Together, we’ll explore what happens when you consider setting a limit, what you fear might follow, and what support you need.

Working With Your Nervous System and Your Felt Experience

We’ll pay attention to what happens as you tell your story.

We’ll create for both parts of you. The part that wants to say ‘no,’ and the part that wants to say ‘yes.’ It all belongs. The ‘yes’-part is associated with a particular nervous system response. It has helped you experience security in relationships where secure connection wasn’t always available. We can retrain some of your nervous system responses. The ‘no’ part is a signal that your wise-self has been there all along. That ‘no’ has a real embodied signature, but it probably got covered up. We’ll rediscover it. In doing so, you regain access to choice. You get your sense of agency and autonomy back.

Embodiment means making room for your experience from the inside.

When you spend so much time asking, “What do they need?” or “Will they be upset?” it can be difficult to notice your own preferences, discomfort, and limits.

Together, we’ll practice recognizing them. Do you want to say yes? Do you need more time? Are you comfortable with this, or are you trying to talk yourself into being comfortable?

Your felt experience can give us something to explore. You don’t have to interpret every sensation correctly or make a decision immediately.

You don’t need to be skilled at noticing your body before we begin. We’ll find a way into this work together.

Boundaries and People Pleasing FAQ

Why do I feel guilty when I set boundaries?

You can know a boundary makes sense and still feel guilty about it. If being helpful, agreeable, or available has been part of how you maintain closeness, doing something different can feel uncomfortable—even when you need it. In therapy, we can explore what that guilt means for you and practice making room for your needs without immediately taking your boundary back.

Can therapy help if I already know what I should say, but can’t say it?

Yes. Knowing the words and being able to use them in a difficult moment can feel very different. You might freeze, lose track of what you want, or agree before you realize what happened. We’ll pay attention to those moments together, exploring what makes speaking up difficult and helping you find more choice in how you respond.

Your Title Goes HereWill setting boundaries make me selfish or less caring?

Having limits can coexist with being thoughtful, generous, and connected. We can explore the difference between helping because you want to and helping because saying no feels unbearable. There’s room to care about other people while also considering your own time, energy, and needs.

What if someone gets upset when I set a boundary?

Someone may feel disappointed or push back, even when you communicate thoughtfully. We can work on expressing your limits, deciding how much explanation feels useful, and navigating the feelings that follow. We’ll also consider your circumstances, including whether speaking up could affect your safety, housing, finances, or other needs.

Will you tell me to cut people out of my life?

You won’t need to decide the future of a relationship before starting therapy, and I won’t make that decision for you. We’ll explore what you want, what happens in the relationship, and what choices are available to you. Your relationships matter, and so does your experience within them.

What if I don’t even know what my boundaries are?

That’s a place we can begin. When you’re used to noticing everyone else’s needs, your own preferences can be harder to recognize. We’ll practice noticing what feels comfortable, what leaves you depleted, and when you need more time before answering. You don’t have to arrive with clear boundaries or know exactly what you want.
