Feeling Numb or Disconnected

Feeling Numb or Disconnected

Therapy for Dissociation and Emotional Numbness in Phoenix, AZ

You’re going through your life—but don’t quite feel here.

You do what needs to be done, but feel far away from yourself. Conversations seem distant. Things you usually enjoy barely reach you. You might feel foggy, empty, or as though you’re watching your life rather than living it.

At Wise Body Therapy, we’ll explore what this disconnection is like for you and work toward feeling more present, supported, and connected to your life.

Boundaries and People-Pleasing

When Trying to Feel More Leaves You Frustrated

You’re trying to find a way back to yourself.

Perhaps you tell yourself to be more present, get motivated, or appreciate the good things in your life. You know there are reasons to feel something, but the feeling doesn’t arrive.

You may worry about what the numbness means. Do you still care? Why can’t you enjoy this? Why do you feel so far away when you want to connect?

Trying harder can become exhausting, especially when you’re already struggling to feel here.

We’ll make room for that frustration, too. Therapy doesn’t have to become another place where you’re expected to produce a feeling.

We can get curious about when disconnection shows up.

For some people, going numb or feeling far away becomes a way of getting through experiences that feel overwhelming. It may bring relief, even as it makes closeness and enjoyment harder to reach.

Sometimes this experience is described as dissociation. Feeling detached from yourself or your body may be called depersonalization.

These words can help describe an experience, but they don’t tell us everything about yours. We’ll consider stress, your history, your current circumstances, and other factors that may contribute.

We won’t assume we already know your story. Together, we’ll explore what happens before you disconnect, what the distance offers you, and what support you need.

Boundaries and People-Pleasing

Working With Your Nervous System and Your Felt Experience

We’ll pay attention to what happens as you tell your story.

You might notice yourself becoming foggy as a conversation gets more personal. Your body may feel heavy, your words harder to find, or the room suddenly seem farther away.

These moments can help guide our work. We can pause, change the focus, and explore what helps you feel more present without becoming overwhelmed.

That might mean noticing something around you, making a small movement, or simply having more time and less pressure. We’ll discover together what feels helpful.

Embodiment means making room for your experience from the inside.

If feeling your body seems unfamiliar or uncomfortable, we can begin with what feels accessible.

Perhaps you notice the support of the chair, a sound in the room, or the texture of something in your hands. Perhaps you notice only that you feel distant. That gives us somewhere to begin, too.

Together, we’ll make room for small moments of comfort, interest, preference, and connection. What feels pleasant? What helps you feel a little more here? When do you need a pause?

You don’t have to force yourself to feel everything at once. We’ll find a way into this work together.

What We Can Work Toward:

Feeling more present matters. Having enough support to stay with your experience matters, too.
